Sharing stories and practising reading using the phonics they have learned in school is vital to improving a child’s confidence and skill with reading, understanding stories and developing a love for reading. It also has an important role in developing a child’s vocabulary and ability to express themselves effectively.
We would like each child to read as often as possible, ideally at least 4 times a week for around 10 minutes at a time. Please make sure their reading record is signed each time they have read. Please also bring reading books and records into school every day as we use them every morning.
NEW Read Write Inc READING BOOKS:
These books are matched to their level and the children should be able to sound out all the words using the phonics sounds they know. Some words are in red- these are their tricky red words which cannot be sounded out, instead they must be learnt by sight.
WHEN WILL THE BOOKS BE CHANGED?
The Read Write Inc books will go out on a Monday and children will have them all week until the next Monday when they will be changed. The idea is that children can read the books several times and get to know the book really well- you can record this in their orange book every time they read it. Some children will also have one of the 'old' reading books to share at home if we have identified that they are a keen reader and need a few books to read a week. Please speak to your child's teacher if you feel your child would benefit from having another book or two alongside their new Read Write Inc book to read.
PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THEM! It's really exciting that we are able to offer children these new books, however it has come at a hefty cost to the school... So please, please, please encourage your child to look after the books and not lose them!!
Year 1 will be sent weekly spellings on a Friday on Seesaw. Please practise these spellings with your child.
We will also set Maths or Literacy homework as we see necessary on Wednesdays- this won’t always be every week but instead it will be responsive to the children’s needs. This will be set on Seesaw so please have your notifications turned on and/or check Seesaw on a Wednesday.
PE for both classes will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Children need to come in their PE clothes on those days. Long hair should be tied up and any earrings should be removed or covered with tape.
PERSONAL BELONGINGS, PE KITS AND WATER BOTTLES: Please ensure that all children's belongings are named so that any misplaced items can be returned to your child.

Year 1 long term plan
Welcome to the Spring term!
This term our theme is Kings and Queens!! We will be discussing all thing royal- what does it mean to be royal?
In English we will be reading the 'Halibut Jackson'. This is a tale about a man who is shy but then suddenly gets an invitation to a royal party. We will be doing a lot of character description, predicting and we will be building up to writing our own version of the story.
We will be using a 'Talk for Writing' style approach alongside 'Power of Reading' to develop language, create story maps and develop our fluency in recalling key information and vocabulary from the texts that we read.
In Maths we will be following the White Rose scheme which focuses on developing reasoning and fluency techniques. This half term our focus will be addition, subtraction and place value. We will initially focus on adding and subtracting numbers to ten and then we will progress up to 20. With place value it will be going up to 50.
We will be learning all about animals including humans.
We will be learning all about castles.
We will be exploring printing.
