Phonics
All Aboard Phonics
At Leiston Primary School we use the All Aboard Phonics program to teach systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) which has been created with the psychology of learning to read at the heart of it's design. The children embark on an exciting journey in Reception (EYFS) in engaging lessons, allowing them to build their confidence to become readers and writers.
Our SSP program's integrated intervention support, is endorsed by research and designed to support those with learning barriers to learn how to decode books and spell confidently. Pupils from EYFS to Year 2 will receive daily phonics lessons alongside the sophisticated intervention process for boosting the progress of any children showing signs of being at risk of falling behind.
In All Aboard Phonics, we introduce a single graphic image for each phoneme introduced. We refer to these images as pictophones. The onset sound of each name is the phoneme being represented. This makes the phonemes easier for the children to manipulate and remember. Children revise the pictophones to make them familiar which allows children to identify rules and patterns for different phonemes.
Parents have access to the All Aboard App to support their child with their phonics learning.
Pupils phonetical understanding is then tracked by teachers throughout the year. At the end of the year in Year 1, pupil's will sit a Phonics Screening Check in line with national expectations. Any pupil's who did not meet the national benchmark to pass their phonics, will have another opportunity to resist the phonics screening check in Year 2.
