Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility Statement

At Leiston Primary School, all staff and governors are committed to working together to provide a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment. We strive to ensure that every pupil is valued and fully included in the school community, regardless of their ability, background, or need.

Legal Compliance and Our Commitment

Since April 2012, schools in England have been required to meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010, which replaced previous equality legislation, including the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. The Equality Act simplifies and strengthens existing laws, making them easier to understand and apply.

Under this Act, schools must not unlawfully discriminate against pupils based on the following protected characteristics:

  • Sex
  • Race
  • Disability
  • Religion or belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender reassignment
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Age (for staff and other adults)
  • Marriage and civil partnership (for staff and other adults)

In line with the legislation, Leiston Primary School ensures that the curriculum is accessible to all pupils. We are also committed to making reasonable adjustments for pupils, staff, or visitors who are considered to have a disability.

Inclusion and Accessibility

Leiston Primary School is committed to fostering a school culture that:

  • Values and includes all members of the school community, including pupils, staff, parents, and visitors.

  • Respects and accommodates a diverse range of educational, physical, sensory, social, spiritual, emotional, and cultural needs.

  • Promotes positive action and increased awareness in support of inclusion and equality.

Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED)

Under the Public Sector Equality Duty, Leiston Primary School will:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act.

  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

Accessibility Plan

Our Accessibility Plan is developed in accordance with Schedule 10 of the Equality Act 2010, which relates specifically to improving access for disabled pupils. The plan outlines how we will:

  • Increase the extent to which disabled pupils can participate in the curriculum.

  • Improve the physical environment to enable better access to education and associated services.

  • Improve the availability of accessible information for disabled pupils.

The Governing Body is responsible for ensuring the implementation, regular review, and monitoring of the Accessibility Plan.
